If the Surface Go 3 returns to a black screen with the Windows logo, use the startup recovery path instead of Shift+Restart.
- Force a shutdown and restart:
- Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the Surface shuts down and restarts, then release it.
- If Windows still does not start, continue to the next step.
- Start the Surface from a USB recovery drive:
- Shut down the Surface.
- Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
- Press and hold the volume-down button while pressing and releasing the power button.
- When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
- This is the documented recovery method when Windows will not start or the device is stuck on the logo screen.
- For the sign-in issue:
- If the device reaches the Windows sign-in screen and I forgot my PIN is available, select it and follow the prompts to reset the PIN. This option is available for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts.
- If I forgot my PIN is not available, sign in with the password instead by selecting Sign-in options and then Enter your password.
- If the password is also forgotten:
- For a Microsoft account, use I forgot my password from the sign-in screen, or Sign-in options > Web sign-in > Forgot my password.
- For a local account, select the password entry button, then OK > Reset password, and answer the security questions.
- If Windows starts but the device is not working correctly, reset the Surface:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files first if the goal is to reinstall Windows without removing personal files.
- Remove everything deletes personal files, apps, and settings.
- If the Surface still cannot start, service may be required.
