    Hi john cook,

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this after the recent update.

Please open Settings > Time & language > Speech, select your voice, and use the preview option. Windows allows the text-to-speech voice to be changed and previewed from this page.

If that works but Read Aloud still does not, please let us know which application you use Read Aloud in, along with your Windows build (winver) and the October 13 KB number. That should help isolate whether the issue is with Windows speech or the application itself.

Hope this points us toward the right next step.

No Microsoft fix is currently published for Edge Read Aloud failing to start and then skipping text after the October 13, 2026 Windows update; update Edge first, then switch Read Aloud to a local voice as the lowest-risk workaround.

    Try these steps in order

    1. Update Microsoft Edge
      • In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
      • Allow any available update to install, select Restart, and test Read Aloud again. Microsoft recommends keeping Edge current for its latest accessibility improvements.^1^
    2. Change the Read Aloud voice
      • Open a normal text-based webpage.
      • Start Read Aloud with Ctrl+Shift+U.
      • Select Voice options, choose a different voice, and preferably test a local/offline Windows voice rather than a Natural/online voice.
      • Restart Read Aloud from the beginning of the paragraph. Edge provides voice and speed selection through this toolbar.^2^
    3. Determine whether PDFs are affected differently
      • Test one ordinary webpage and one locally saved PDF.
      • If webpages work but PDFs skip sentences, the problem is in the PDF Read Aloud path rather than Read Aloud generally. Edge previously introduced PDF-specific reliability improvements that apply only to its new PDF viewer.^3^
    4. Test without profile data or extensions
      • Press Ctrl+Shift+N to open an InPrivate window.
      • Open a simple webpage and test Read Aloud.
      • If that works, temporarily disable extensions under Edge > Settings > Extensions, especially reader, translation, accessibility, ad-blocking, or script-blocking extensions.
      • If necessary, select the profile icon and test with Guest or a temporary new Edge profile.^4^
    5. Reset Edge only if the preceding tests fail
      • Open Edge > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values.
      • This resets items such as the startup page, search engine, and pinned tabs, and disables extensions; it should not remove favorites, history, or saved passwords.^4^

    Fix status and reporting

The current Edge known-issues tracker does not list this Read Aloud symptom among its tracked issues.^5^ Windows 11 release-health pages likewise do not identify Read Aloud as a known October 13 update issue—for example, the 24H2 page lists unrelated desktop, Remote Desktop, and AC-3 issues.^6^ Therefore, the timing alone does not establish the Windows update as the cause, and uninstalling the security update is not currently a documented workaround.

Report the reproducible behavior directly from Edge:

    1. Press Alt+Shift+I.
    2. Enter: “Read Aloud does not start on the first attempt; after retrying it begins at another paragraph and skips sentences.”
    3. Include diagnostic data, the affected webpage/PDF type, and whether a local voice or InPrivate window works.
    4. Select Send.^1^

Also record Settings > System > About > OS build, Windows Update > Update history > KB number, and Edge > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge > version. Those details are needed to distinguish an Edge-version regression from a particular Windows build if Microsoft publishes a fix.
