How to find a product key when I've lost the confirmation email and changed my motherboard

Hello,

I purchased a Windows 11 Pro license from Microsoft.com and need help retrieving my product key or reactivating my license.

What happened:

I replaced my PC's boot drive and did a clean install of Windows 11 Pro. Windows is now running on the generic installation key and will not activate. I no longer have the original confirmation email, and my order history on account.microsoft.com shows the order but has no "View product key" option, only "Order help."

What I've tried:

  • Activation troubleshooter, including "I changed hardware on this device recently" while signed in with the account above. No license was found.
  • slmgr /ato returns error 0x803F7001.
  • License status (slmgr /dlv): Notification, reason 0xC004F034.

Could you please look up my order and send me the product key, or reactivate the Windows 11 Pro license on this PC?

Thank you,

jeh

I reject your answer but don't want to delete it. I want say I've made 8-10 attempts to work through your scripts above and they all lead to a dead-end. There does not seem to be any way to get in contact with a human at the moment.

Contact Microsoft Support to have the order verified and either recover the product key or restore the associated license; Microsoft Learn Q&A participants cannot access orders, retrieve keys, or activate PCs.

    Request purchase and activation support

    1. Open Contact Microsoft customer support and choose the Personal account tab.
    2. Under Microsoft technical support, select Get help.
    3. Enter: Windows activation after motherboard replacement—Microsoft Store order and product key unavailable.
    4. If self-help results appear, select Contact Support, then choose:
      • Product: Windows
      • Category: Activation or technical support
      • Contact method: Chat or another offered option

Microsoft’s support page routes Windows activation and account/billing issues through Get Help and may offer chat. ^1^

    Provide the agent privately with:

    • The Microsoft Store order number and purchase date
    • The Microsoft account used for the purchase
    • The receipt or proof of purchase
    • A screenshot of Order history showing the order and missing View product key
    • The installed edition: Windows 11 Pro
    • Errors 0x803F7001 and 0xC004F034
    • Confirmation that the hardware-change troubleshooter found no eligible license

Do not post the receipt, email address, full order number, or any recovered product key in this public thread. Edit the question to remove the order number and personal name.

Which license should Support look for?

The purchase channel determines whether there should be a key:

    • A digital copy bought from the Microsoft Store online website uses a product key located in the confirmation email containing the order information.
    • A Windows Pro upgrade bought inside the Microsoft Store app uses a digital license associated with the purchasing Microsoft account rather than a retrievable product key. ^2^

Microsoft says it retains product-key records when the purchase was made from its online store, with the purchase visible in Microsoft account Order history. Since the order is visible but the key and original email are unavailable, the support agent must verify what the order actually supplied. ^3^

The purchase date predates Windows 11, so ask the agent to identify the exact product on the receipt—such as a full license or Pro upgrade—rather than assuming it was originally a Windows 11 purchase.

    After Microsoft provides the key

    Enter it through:

Start → Settings → System → Activation → Change product key

Then enter the unique 25-character key. A retail copy requiring a key must use that same key after a motherboard change. ^4^

Do not enter the generic installation key again. It selects the Pro edition but does not establish ownership or activate Windows.

Error 0x803F7001 means Windows cannot find a valid Windows 11 license for the current device. Error 0xC004F034 can occur when the supplied key is invalid or belongs to another Windows version or edition. ^5^

Since the hardware-change troubleshooter has already been completed and found no license, repeating it is unlikely to add anything; the next step is purchase verification by Microsoft Support.
