Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This is a sole-Global-Administrator tenant lockout, so Microsoft Support must open a tenant-recovery case, perform high-assurance ownership verification, and then help the designated Global Administrator regain access to the existing tenant.^1^
Request Data Protection assistance
- Do not post the tenant ID, account name, subscription ID, invoices, phone number, or other identifying information publicly.
- Use Microsoft’s sign-in-independent customer-support contact page and select the telephone number for your country or region.^2^
- Tell the agent:
- This is a Microsoft Entra tenant lockout.
- You are the sole Global Administrator.
- The only registered method is an unavailable Microsoft Authenticator entry.
- No alternate administrator or verification method exists.
- You cannot create a portal support request.
- You need a support case routed to the Data Protection/Tenant Recovery team for ownership verification and MFA recovery.
- Keep the case number and respond only through the private channels specified by Microsoft Support.
Microsoft’s documented recovery path explicitly says to call customer service when the portals are inaccessible. After ownership is verified, Microsoft helps a designated Global Administrator recover access to the existing tenant; it does not create a replacement tenant.^1^
Closely matching Q&A cases—including a personal Microsoft account owning an Azure tenant—were escalated through a support ticket to the Data Protection team, which then contacted the tenant owner by email or phone.^3^
A Q&A moderator cannot directly inspect the tenant, reset MFA, or change account information. In matching cases, moderators have sometimes initiated a support ticket for the Data Protection team, but the actual identity verification and recovery remain with Microsoft Support.^4^ Therefore, keep this Q&A request open for moderator review while also using the phone route; avoid creating duplicate cases after one has been assigned.
Prepare for ownership verification
Have these details ready, but provide them only through the support case’s private channel:
- Tenant ID and default
onmicrosoft.comdomain - Affected administrator sign-in name
- Azure subscription ID
- Billing or subscription evidence
- A reachable email address and telephone number
- Any other evidence specifically requested by the Data Protection team
The exact verification evidence and recovery action are determined by Microsoft during the high-assurance ownership-validation process.^1^
After access is restored
Immediately add administrative redundancy. Microsoft recommends at least two Global Administrator accounts with distinct credentials and MFA methods, plus emergency-access planning to avoid another complete lockout.^5^
At minimum:
- Re-register Microsoft Authenticator on the recovered account.
- Add another permitted authentication method.
- Create a second, separately secured Global Administrator.
- Configure and monitor dedicated emergency-access accounts.
- Test the recovery accounts periodically.
