Contact Microsoft technical support through the Get Help option and request an agent for classic Outlook for Windows → adding a Gmail account.^1^

    Talk to a support agent

    1. Open the Microsoft Support contact page.
    2. Select Get Help under Microsoft technical support.
    3. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with Microsoft 365 or Office.
    4. Enter: Classic Outlook continuously loops while adding Gmail account.
    5. Continue to Contact Support and select the available contact method, which may include browser chat. Available support options depend on the product and subscription.^1^
    6. Give the agent:
      • Your Outlook version and build from File → Office Account → About Outlook
      • The exact message displayed during the loop
      • Whether Google’s permissions page appears
      • Whether this affects one or every Gmail account

If you have Microsoft 365 for home or a qualifying one-time Office purchase, the classic Outlook support page also provides a Contact Us option under Need more help?^2^

If you want to try the documented fix first

If the loop reaches Google’s authorization page, ensure that the permission allowing Microsoft apps & services to read, compose, send, and permanently delete Gmail messages is selected. Missing that permission is a documented cause of Gmail setup failures in classic Outlook.^3^

For Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later:

    1. On Outlook’s error window, select Retry.
    2. Complete the browser sign-in again.
    3. On Google’s permissions page, select the permission for Microsoft apps & services.
    4. Select Allow and let Outlook finish adding the account.

If that fixed-build retry still loops, Microsoft’s manual workaround is:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. In your Google Account, open Security → Your connections to third-party apps & services → Microsoft apps & services → See Details.
    3. Select Remove all access, then confirm.
    4. In Windows, search for and open Credential Manager.
    5. Select Windows Credentials → Generic credentials.
    6. Remove the two credentials for the affected Gmail account whose names begin with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 and include tp_google_imap_Oauth2.
    7. Reopen Outlook and select File → Add Account.
    8. Complete browser sign-in and select the required Microsoft apps & services permission.^3^

Removing those credentials signs the affected Gmail connection out; avoid deleting unrelated saved credentials.

    Hi Karen,

Getting stuck in that endless login loop is incredibly frustrating! This is a known issue with Classic Outlook, and it almost always happens because of a missed permission checkbox on Google's end or hidden cached credentials on your PC.

Before spending time on the phone with a support agent, try this "deep clean" method that usually breaks the loop:

Step 1: Revoke old permissions in Google

    1. Open your web browser and go to your Google Account Security settings.

Go to Your connections to third-party apps & services > Microsoft apps & services > See Details.

Select Remove all access, then confirm.

Step 2: Clear the stuck Windows Credentials

    Close Outlook completely.

Click your Windows Start menu, type Credential Manager, and open it.

Click on Windows Credentials, then scroll down to Generic credentials.

Look for any entries that start with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 and include tp_google_imap_Oauth2.

Click on them and select Remove.

Step 3: Re-add the account carefully

Reopen Outlook and go to File > Add Account.

    Complete the browser sign-in.

CRITICAL STEP: When the Google permissions page appears, you must ensure the box allowing Microsoft apps & services to read, compose, send, and permanently delete Gmail messages is explicitly selected. Missing this exact permission is what triggers the loop.

Select Allow and let Outlook finish the setup.

Give this a try and let us know if it finally lets you through!
