Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
For Microsoft 365 Personal, activation usually does not require a long product key. The subscription is normally activated by signing in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy or renew it.
Try this:
- Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the March 2026 payment.
- If the subscription is active, Microsoft 365 Personal should appear there.
- Open Word or another Office app, then go to File > Account.
- Check the account shown after Belongs to.
- If the account in Word is not the same account that has the subscription, sign out and then sign back in with the correct Microsoft account.
- If Office is prompting for a product key, sign in with the Microsoft account instead of entering a key.
Important exceptions:
- If the renewal was bought as a physical box or card from a retail store, the subscription does not start until the product key on the box/card is redeemed.
- If the payment was made directly to Microsoft but the subscription does not appear under Services & subscriptions, check the Microsoft account used for the purchase. The subscription may be linked to a different account.
- If the renewal status online is wrong even after checking the correct account, contact Microsoft Support.
If the desktop apps are still not activated, documents can still be accessed in the browser through Office.com while the subscription issue is being resolved.
