If Excel will not open or is not functional, the supported repair path is to repair the Office installation.

    1. Close all Office apps.
    2. In Windows, open the repair tool:
      • Windows 10: Right-click Start > Apps and Features.
      • Windows 11: Right-click Start > Installed apps or go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
    3. Find Microsoft 365 or Office in the app list.
    4. Select it, then choose Modify.
    5. If prompted with repair options:
      • Choose Online Repair > Repair for the most complete fix.
      • Quick Repair is faster, but it only detects and replaces corrupted files.
    6. Follow the on-screen steps to complete the repair.
    7. Restart the computer if prompted, then open Excel again.

If the problem happens when double-clicking an Excel file and Excel opens only to a blank screen, Microsoft recommends Online Repair.

If Excel still hangs, freezes, or stops working after repair, perform a selective startup (clean boot) to check whether another background app or service is conflicting with Excel.

The 'Repair Now' button on that error popup dialog only performs a quick repair of the Office apps and that rarely resolves the problem with the Office apps, the best option is to perform a full online repair of your Office installation.

Before performing this process, please log into your Microsoft account on this link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/) and check to ensure your Office licence or Microsoft 365 subscription is listed correctly on your account.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that does not resolve the problem, completely uninstall Office, restart your PC, then download and reinstall Office from your account online (https://account.microsoft.com/services/).
