Hello,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with Microsoft AutoUpdate on my Mac mini M1.

Microsoft AutoUpdate repeatedly opens its main window displaying "All apps are up-to-date", even though no updates are available.

System information:

  • Device: Mac mini M1
  • Microsoft 365 subscription: Microsoft 365 Family
  • AutoUpdate version: 4.86
  • Build: 4.86.26093010
  • Update mode: AutomaticDownload

Additional findings:

  • The Mac was previously enrolled in the Microsoft Insider/Beta Channel.
  • It has since been switched back to the Current Channel.
  • Running defaults read com.microsoft.autoupdate2 ChannelName returns no channel setting.
  • No Beta, Insider or Channel entries are present in the AutoUpdate preferences.
  • The AutoUpdate window continues to open repeatedly and shows “All apps are up-to-date”.

Could you please confirm:

  1. Is build 4.86.26093010 a production release or an Insider/Beta release?
  2. Is this a known issue with Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.86?
  3. Is there a recommended fix that preserves automatic Microsoft 365 updates?
  4. Could this behavior be related to a previous Insider/Beta Channel enrollment?

Thank you.Hello,

Hi, Ales Kogovsek

Build 4.86.26093010 is not listed in the public Release history for Microsoft AutoUpdate. The latest published production release is 4.85, so 4.86 appears to be a Beta-stage build. The repeated window is not yet documented as a known public issue, but it may be a 4.86 regression rather than leftover Insider preferences. A missing ChannelName correctly defaults MAU to Current Channel.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Download and reinstall the latest production MAU package using the official Troubleshoot Microsoft AutoUpdate in Microsoft 365 and Office for Mac installer. This repairs damaged helper files and permissions without disabling automatic updates.

Restart the Mac, open Word, then select Help > Check for Updates > Advanced. Confirm Current Channel and keep Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date selected.

In System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, make sure Microsoft AutoUpdate is allowed under Allow in the Background.

The previous Beta enrollment is unlikely to remain active when no channel preference exists, although reinstalling MAU is recommended to replace the 4.86 components.
