Confirmation of Windows 11 Pro OEM License After Motherboard Replacement

2026-10-14T03:58:48.8333333+00:00

Dear Microsoft Licensing Support,

I would like to request clarification regarding the licensing policy for a Windows 11 Pro OEM license.

We have a desktop computer (HP Pro Tower 280 G9) that was activated using a separately purchased Windows 11 Pro OEM license. The computer's motherboard has failed and needs to be replaced.

The replacement motherboard is the same model (or an equivalent replacement approved by the manufacturer) and is intended solely to repair the device, not to upgrade or replace the computer.

Could you please confirm whether the existing Windows 11 Pro OEM license remains valid after this motherboard replacement, or whether a new Windows license is required?

Thank you for your assistance. We look forward to your guidance.

Best regards,

Nguyen Thi Le

    Dear Nguyen Thi Le,

Under Microsoft’s System Builder Licensing rules, the existing Windows 11 Pro OEM license remains valid after the motherboard replacement, provided that specific conditions are met:

Defect/Repair Purpose: The motherboard replacement is being performed specifically to repair a hardware failure, not as an upgrade.

Manufacturer-Approved Replacement: The replacement motherboard is the same make/model (or an equivalent replacement approved by HP under warranty or repair policy).

    Re-activation Steps

If Repaired by HP or an Authorized Service Center:

If the repair is conducted by HP or an authorized technician, they will typically inject a new digital product key into the replacement motherboard’s BIOS/firmware.

    • If Repaired In-House or Out-of-Warranty: If the replacement board does not automatically activate Windows, you can reactivate it using the original product key:
      1. Go to Settings > System > Activation.
      2. Select Change product key and enter the original 25-digit OEM product key.
      3. If automatic activation fails due to a hardware hash mismatch, select Troubleshoot and choose "I changed hardware on this device recently" (signing in with the Microsoft account associated with the device if prompted).
Microsoft Licensing Support Contact: If activation is still blocked, you can contact Microsoft Support with proof of purchase for the original license and the repair/service invoice for the replacement motherboard. Support agents can manually clear the activation block for repair scenarios.Dear Nguyen Thi Le, Under Microsoft’s System Builder Licensing rules, the existing Windows 11 Pro OEM license remains valid after the motherboard replacement, provided that specific conditions are met: Defect/Repair Purpose: The motherboard replacement is being performed specifically to repair a hardware failure, not as an upgrade.
