    Dear Cindie Smith,

If you no longer require access to your work account, please follow the suggestions provided in the AI answer's suggestions above to remove the account from the Microsoft Authenticator app. For reference: How to sign out from Authenticator | Microsoft Support

    • Open Microsoft Authenticator.
    • Select your work or school account.
    • Tap the Settings icon (or the three-dot menu).
    • Choose Remove account and confirm.

If Remove account is greyed out or unavailable, the device may still be registered with your former employer. In that case:

    • Go to Settings > Accounts (Android) or Settings > General > VPN & Device Management (iPhone).
    • Remove any work profile, Company Portal, or management profile associated with your former employer.
    • Then try removing the account from Authenticator again.

If the issue persists, to better understand what's preventing you from removing the work account, could you please provide a bit more information?

    • Are you using an iPhone or an Android device?
    • Is the account listed only in Microsoft Authenticator, or is it also present in the Company Portal app?
    • What happens when you attempt to remove the account? Do you receive any error message or warning? If possible, please share a screenshot of the error or the options you see when selecting the account (with any personal information hidden).
    • Was this device managed by your former employer?
    • Do you still have access to the work account, or has it already been disabled by your former employer?

If you have any questions or if I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to reach out. Looking forward to your update.

To remove a work account from Microsoft Authenticator, remove that account from the app:

    1. Open Microsoft Authenticator.
    2. Select the work account to remove.
    3. Tap the Settings gear.
    4. Tap Remove account.

    Important:

    • After removing the account, that device can no longer be used to verify sign-in for that account.
    • If the account was your last or only account in Authenticator, removing all accounts effectively signs out of the app.

If the Remove account option is not available for that specific account:

    1. On the phone, open Settings.
    2. Go to the device account area. The name can vary, such as Accounts, Accounts & sync, or Accounts and backup.
    3. If the old work or school account is listed there, remove it.
    4. Restart the device and check Authenticator again.
    5. If the account is tied to an Android Work Profile, remove the Work Profile.
    6. Sign out of other Microsoft apps on the device, such as Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, or Microsoft 365, because they can keep the account present.

If the account still cannot be removed individually, the documented fallback is to remove all accounts from Authenticator by clearing the app data.

    On Android:

    1. Open Settings > Apps.
    2. Select Authenticator.
    3. Select Storage or Storage & cache.
    4. Tap Clear data > OK.

Warning: there is no undo. All accounts will be removed, and the device will no longer be usable to verify sign-in for any of those accounts.

If Authenticator backup exists and needs to be removed as well:

    1. Open Authenticator > Settings.
    2. Under Backup, turn off Cloud Backup.
    3. Select OK to delete the backup.
