Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Your organization’s IT administrator should re-enable the laptop’s device record in Microsoft Entra ID; this restores authentication and does not reset Windows or erase the laptop’s local files.
What to do
- Contact your workplace IT/help desk.
- Provide:
- The exact message shown on the sign-in screen.
- The laptop’s device name, if displayed.
- Any error code or Device Object ID shown.
- Ask them to check Microsoft Entra admin center → Entra ID → Devices → All devices.
- They should locate the laptop, select it, and choose Enable. The administrator must have the Intune Administrator or Cloud Device Administrator role to do this.^1^
- After IT confirms it is enabled, connect the laptop to the internet, restart it, and sign in with the work account.
Disabling a Microsoft Entra device blocks its authentication and access to protected organizational resources. Microsoft documents re-enabling it through the admin center when it was disabled unintentionally.^2^
Will this affect your data?
Re-enabling the device should not remove your files, installed applications, or Windows settings. It changes the device’s enabled status in Microsoft Entra ID rather than reinstalling Windows.
Do not select Reset this PC, reinstall Windows, disconnect the work account, or attempt registry changes unless your IT administrator directs you to do so. Resetting is a separate operation:
- Keep my files preserves personal files but removes applications and settings.
- Remove everything deletes personal files, applications, and settings.
- An encrypted work laptop may also require its BitLocker recovery key.^3^
If IT cannot find an enabled/disabled record
Ask IT to determine whether the device was disabled or deleted:
- Disabled: They can enable the existing record.
- Deleted: It cannot simply be enabled; the laptop must be re-registered. The required procedure depends on whether it is Microsoft Entra joined, hybrid joined, or registered.^2^
Because this is an organization-managed laptop and the work account cannot sign in, IT should perform or supervise any re-registration. Do not erase the laptop as a first troubleshooting step.
