Because the laptop was repaired only two weeks ago and now reports “No battery is detected,” return it to the repair provider and ask them to check the battery connection and the repair under warranty before opening the laptop or attempting hardware work yourself.
Before taking it back
- Save your work, then shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect and reconnect the charger firmly at both ends, and try another working wall outlet.
- Turn the laptop on and inspect the battery icon.
- After saving your work again, briefly unplug the charger:
- If the laptop immediately turns off, reconnect it and stop testing. Tell the repair provider that Windows cannot detect the battery and the computer cannot run without the charger.
- If it remains on, continue with the software checks below.
Do not open the case yourself, especially if the recent repair has a warranty.
Software check
First identify the exact make and model from the label underneath the laptop or by searching System Information from Start.
Important: If it is a Surface Pro X, do not uninstall its battery driver. Microsoft warns that restoring the driver afterward requires a full system reset.^1^
For other models:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and select Uninstall device.
- In Device Manager, select Action → Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the laptop using Start → Power → Restart.
- Check whether the battery now appears.
A similar generic Windows laptop procedure recommends reinstalling the battery drivers and arranging a physical battery inspection if the problem remains.^2^
Then install available driver updates:
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If View optional updates appears, open it and install applicable driver updates.
- Restart the laptop. Windows 10 provides recommended and optional hardware drivers through Windows Update.^3^
If the Batteries category or battery device remains absent after restarting, contact the recent repair provider or the laptop manufacturer. Give them the exact model, the “No battery is detected” message, whether it shuts off when unplugged, and what was repaired two weeks ago.
