Try these steps in Windows 10:
- Check the obvious first:
- If the headset has a Mute button, make sure it is off.
- Make sure the microphone or headset is connected correctly.
- If using Bluetooth, make sure it is paired and connected.
- Make sure the correct microphone is selected:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the correct microphone in Choose your input device.
- Speak into it and check Test your microphone. If the line moves, Windows is receiving sound.
- Check microphone access for apps:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Make sure Allow desktop apps to access your microphone is also On.
- If the device has a camera with a built-in mic, also check Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera and make sure access is on.
- Raise the microphone level:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select Device Properties.
- On the Levels tab, increase Microphone and Microphone Boost.
- Test again under Test your microphone.
- Run the Windows recording troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run Recording Audio.
- If Windows still does not detect the mic, reinstall the audio driver:
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
- Check Delete the driver software for this device, then select Uninstall.
- Restart the PC.
- If needed, return to Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Then right-click the audio driver and select Update driver.
If the mic works in Test your microphone but not in Instagram voice messages or calls, Windows is detecting the mic and the issue is likely app access or app-specific behavior.
