Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
In new Outlook, select the toggle in the upper-right corner and choose Switch back to classic Outlook to make classic Outlook open by default again.^1^
Switch back
- Open new Outlook.
- Select the New Outlook toggle in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Switch back to classic Outlook.
- Complete or skip the feedback prompt. Classic Outlook should open.
Choose Use classic Outlook this time only if you want a one-time launch; future launches will continue redirecting to new Outlook.^1^
If the toggle is missing
- Open Start and search for Outlook.
- Launch Outlook (classic), not the Outlook icon marked New.
- If Outlook (classic) is not listed, install it using Microsoft’s classic Outlook installer. Many newer Windows devices include new Outlook but not classic Outlook.^2^
- After installation, search for Outlook (classic) again and open it.
If classic Outlook is installed but still redirects to new Outlook, Microsoft documents this recovery:
- Close Outlook.
- Search Windows for Registry Editor and open it.
- Go to:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences - Double-click UseNewOutlook and set Value data to
0. - From Start, launch Outlook (classic).^1^
Editing the registry incorrectly can affect Office behavior; change only this documented value.
For a work or school account, a missing toggle can also mean that your organization disabled it. In that case, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator.^3^
