A unified Azure platform for creating and managing AI models, agents, and applications with built‑in enterprise security, monitoring, and governance
The Create by type buttons appear only when Prompt flow is opened in Microsoft Foundry (classic) within a hub-based project; they are unavailable in the new portal or a standard Foundry project.^1^
Create the Prompt flow
- In Microsoft Foundry, turn off the New Foundry toggle in the top banner.
- Open the required project.
- Check the breadcrumb under the project name:
- (Hub) means it is a hub-based project and supports Prompt flow.
- (Foundry) means it is a Foundry project and does not support Prompt flow.
- If it shows (Foundry), create or select a hub-based project instead. Prompt flow cannot be enabled inside that existing Foundry project.^1^
- Inside the hub-based project, select Prompt flow from the left navigation.
- If it is hidden, select … More at the bottom of the left pane and open or pin Prompt flow.
- Select + Create.
- Under Create by type, select Create on Standard flow, Chat flow, or Evaluation flow.
- Enter a folder name and select Create.
- When the editor opens, select Start compute session. A deployed model and compute session are required to run the flow.^2^
The classic Prompt flow documentation explicitly does not apply to Foundry projects.^3^
Alternative: Azure Machine Learning studio
If a hub-based Foundry project is unavailable, Prompt flow can also be created from an Azure Machine Learning workspace:
- Open the workspace in Azure Machine Learning studio.
- Select Prompt flow in the left navigation.
- On the Flows tab, select Create.
- Select Create on a flow-type tile, or Clone on a gallery sample.
- Open the flow and select Start compute session.^4^
Important lifecycle notice
Prompt flow is no longer recommended for new development and will be retired from Microsoft Foundry and Azure Machine Learning after April 20, 2027. For a new application, use Microsoft Agent Framework instead; plan migration for existing Prompt flow workloads.^3^
