Changing between multiple Microsoft Teams accounts within the app or browser
A red indicator in Teams can mean different things depending on where it appears:
- A red circle with a number on the Teams taskbar icon is a badge count for unread or unseen activity.
- A red dot or exclamation mark on the Teams icon in the system tray can indicate a pending sign-in or re-authentication prompt.
- If Teams shows a sign-in banner, Teams can block new chats, calls, meetings, or other features until sign-in is completed again.
For the affected users, use this check path:
- In Teams, look for a sign-in banner and select it, or select the sign-in button if shown.
- If no sign-in window appears, check the system tray near the clock for a Teams icon with a red dot or exclamation mark and open it.
- If still nothing appears, quit and reopen Teams by right-clicking the Teams icon in the system tray and selecting Quit, then launch Teams again.
- Complete sign-in and any required multi-factor authentication (MFA) steps.
- After successful sign-in, confirm the red indicator disappears.
- Check that users are on the required network location for Teams access. If the organization requires a VPN, make sure it is active and stable before launching Teams.
- Avoid switching between network locations while Teams is running.
- Update Teams from profile picture > Check for updates.
If the red mark is only on the taskbar icon and users still have full access to Teams, it may just be a badge count from unread activity rather than a sign-in problem.
If multiple users are affected and the issue continues after re-authentication and update checks, the documented next step is to contact the IT administrator or Microsoft support for further investigation.

- Inconsistent delivery of Microsoft Teams channel notifications across multiple channels and users. - Microsoft Q&A Microsoft Teams channel notifications triggered by @channel mentions are being delivered inconsistently. The issue began approximately two weeks ago and affects a large user group (~80 users) across multiple Teams channels. Prior to this period, notifications were working as expected. No changes were made to user notification settings or channel configurations at the time the issue started, which indicates that this is unlikely to be caused by individual user preferences or channel-level settings. Some users receive the notifications, while others do not, or receive them only sporadically. The issue is reproducible across different channels and users. As an example, I did not receive any notifications in the Teams desktop client for the last three posts in one affected channel. When I accessed Teams via the web client, I was able to see only one of these three notifications, which indicates inconsistent notification behavior between the Teams desktop and web clients. Additionally, many channels were recently automatically set to “Hidden.” Even after users manually selected “Show” for these channels, notifications continue to be missing or unreliable. Removing and re-adding users to channels is not a viable workaround due to the number of affected users and channels involved. We would appreciate your help in looking into this issue and letting us know whether it is a known or currently ongoing problem in Microsoft Teams. If this is the case, any guidance on possible workarounds, mitigations, or upcoming fixes would be very helpful. Given the number of users and channels affected, we would also appreciate recommendations for a scalable solution that does not require manual changes at user or channel level. Thank you.
