This is usually a hardware issue with the keyboard. Underneath the keyboard, there is a circuit board with numerous signal tracks. Cracks in the tracks, dust or debris buildup, or corrosion can disrupt the signal flow. Holding down a different key can send the signal through an alternate track, which is why it sometimes works.

To diagnose a keyboard problem, it's essential to test with the onscreen keyboard or a different keyboard via USB or Bluetooth. If the alternative keyboard works, it's certain that the issue is hardware-related.

Since keyboard drivers were already uninstalled and reinstalled, focus on isolating whether this is a stuck modifier/software state, a layout issue, or a hardware problem.

    1. Test in On-Screen Keyboard
      • Press Windows + R, type OSK, and press Enter.
      • Try the W key there.
      • If W works normally in On-Screen Keyboard, that points more strongly to a problem with the physical keyboard hardware.
    2. Clear any stuck modifier state
      • Press and release these keys one at a time on both sides where applicable:
        • Ctrl
        • Shift
        • Alt
        • Windows key
      • Then test W again.
      • This can clear a modifier key that Windows is treating as stuck.
    3. Recheck accessibility keyboard settings
      • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
      • Make sure Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Toggle Keys are all Off.
      • Test again after a restart.
    4. Verify the keyboard layout
      • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region.
      • Confirm the intended keyboard layout is selected and remove extra keyboard layouts if present.
      • Windows maps physical keys through the active keyboard layout, so an incorrect layout can make a key behave unexpectedly.
    5. Run the keyboard troubleshooter
      • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Keyboard.
      • Run it and apply any fixes it suggests.
    6. Test with another keyboard
      • Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and test W.
      • If the external keyboard works normally, the built-in keyboard is likely the issue.
    7. If only the built-in keyboard is affected
      • This points to a hardware fault such as the keyboard itself or its internal connection.
      • On-screen keyboard working normally would support that conclusion.
