To better understand your situation, could you please clarify a few details? Where did you originally purchase your Office license? Was it directly from Microsoft, a retailer, or a third-party website? After the macOS update, did you reinstall any Office applications, or are you still using the same installation as before?

Although you no longer have access to your previous email address, is the email associated with that Microsoft account a third-party address or an Outlook/Hotmail address? Did you reinstall Office through the Mac App Store?

Please share these details to determine the best way to recover your existing license without requiring an unnecessary new purchase.

Identify the installed Office version before deleting licensing data: Office 2019 for Mac has a current activation limitation that cannot be repaired, while supported one-time-purchase versions can usually be reactivated by recovering the Microsoft account that owns the license.

    1. Identify which Office license you have

    Collect these details:

    • The Office year/edition: 2011, 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024.
    • The macOS version: Apple menu → About This Mac.
    • The complete activation message and any error code.
    • If an Office application still opens and it is Office 2016 or newer, check File → Account → Product Information → Belongs to for the Microsoft-account username associated with it.^1^

Also search every accessible mailbox for Microsoft purchase confirmations or receipts. This can identify both the Office version and the account used to buy it.

    2. If it is Office 2019 for Mac

Do not remove license files or reinstall Office 2019. Following the July 13, 2026 licensing-certificate change, Office 2019 for Mac cannot be reactivated for editing, saving, or creating files; reinstalling does not resolve it.^2^

    The available alternatives are:

    • Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the web.
    • Purchase Office Home 2024.
    • Subscribe to Microsoft 365.

Your existing documents are not removed by this activation failure.

    3. For Office 2021, Office 2024, or Microsoft 365, recover the owning account

A previously redeemed product key normally remains associated with the Microsoft account used during redemption. Reinstallation then uses that account rather than requiring the key again.^3^

Because the original email address is inaccessible:

    1. Try any alternate email alias or telephone number previously attached to the Microsoft account.
    2. Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper to identify whether the username is recognized and which recovery route applies.^4^
    3. If directed to the recovery form, provide a currently working email address for the response. Gather old passwords, purchase information, contacts, and other account details first. Complete it from a familiar device and location if possible. Microsoft normally sends the result to the working address within 24 hours.^5^
    4. After regaining access, sign in to the Microsoft account’s Services page and verify that the exact Office license appears there.

Microsoft Support cannot bypass identity validation, send a manual reset link, or change the account details for you.^5^

    4. Reset the local activation only after confirming the license

For a supported version, once the correct account and license are confirmed:

    1. Quit every Office application.
    2. Download Microsoft’s Office for Mac License Removal Tool.
    3. Open the downloaded .pkg and follow the installer.
    4. When removal completes, open Word or Excel.
    5. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the confirmed license.
    6. Restart the Mac after activation succeeds.^6^

Do not perform this reset before recovering the account: the tool removes the existing local license data, and reactivation requires the email address and password associated with the one-time purchase or subscription.^7^

    Older Office versions

    • Office for Mac 2011: a one-time purchase requires its product key. Check the original packaging, purchase receipt, retailer account, or Microsoft Store order history.^8^
    • Office 2016: support has ended. Before attempting changes, identify the exact edition and activation error; do not install a different edition because, for example, Home & Student does not license Outlook.^9^
