An Azure service that stores unstructured data in the cloud as blobs.
Hello Cory Seaman,
Greetings! Thanks for raising this question in the Q&A forum.
The most likely reason is that your accounts are the legacy "GPv1 with ZRS" configuration (also called ZRS Classic), which is a special case and not a normal GPv1 account. In the current Azure Storage architecture, ZRS is only supported on general-purpose v2 accounts, and ZRS Classic was only ever available for block blobs in GPv1 accounts. Microsoft is retiring this configuration. When you try to jump straight to StorageV2 plus LRS in one operation, the request carries a SKU and kind combination that the legacy account does not accept, which is why both the portal and the CLI return "Values for request parameters are invalid: sku". I can't see the accounts themselves, so please confirm the details in step 1 first.
- Confirm the account kind and SKU. Run this for each account:
az storage account show --name fsdprimarystorage1 --resource-group <rg-name> --query "{kind:kind, sku:sku.name}" -o table
az storage account show --name mccdip --resource-group <rg-name> --query "{kind:kind, sku:sku.name}" -o table
If the kind is Storage and the SKU is Standard_ZRS, the accounts are GPv1 with ZRS and the steps below apply.
- Upgrade to GPv2 and keep ZRS first. Do not change redundancy in the same step. In the Azure portal, open the storage account, go to Configuration, and choose the Upgrade option, which moves the account to GPv2 with ZRS. Microsoft's migration guidance for this configuration describes the same path. The CLI form for ordinary GPv1 accounts is:
az storage account update --name <account-name> --resource-group <rg-name> --set kind=StorageV2 --access-tier Hot
If this CLI form still returns the SKU error, use the portal upgrade path above, since the legacy ZRS account type is handled differently.
- Then convert from ZRS to LRS as a separate step. After the account is GPv2, change the replication setting. In the portal, open Redundancy (or Configuration), select Locally-redundant storage (LRS), and save. In the CLI:
az storage account update --name <account-name> --resource-group <rg-name> --sku Standard_LRS
Note that LRS keeps all copies in a single datacenter, so you lose zone resilience. Please make sure this is intended.
- If the upgrade is blocked, migrate manually. Create a new GPv2 account with LRS in the same region, then copy the data with AzCopy:
azcopy copy "https://<source>.blob.core.windows.net/<container>?<SAS>" "https://<target>.blob.core.windows.net/<container>?<SAS>" --recursive
Then update your applications and connection strings to point to the new account, validate, and delete the old account.
- Plan around the retirement timeline. Microsoft's guidance says creation of new GPv1 with ZRS configurations is blocked, and that any accounts not migrated after October 2026 are automatically upgraded to GPv2, which may increase billing. Since we are now in October 2026, I recommend completing this migration soon so that you control the target redundancy and cost.
