If the USB drive is physically connected but shows no volume, check it in Disk Management first.
- Right-click Start and open Disk Management.
- Look for the USB drive by matching its size.
- If it appears as Unallocated and the drive is empty, right-click it and select New Simple Volume, then follow the prompts.
- If it appears with a partition but no drive letter, add one by using Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- If it is an external USB drive and it still does not appear correctly, unplug it, plug it back in, then select Action > Rescan Disks.
- Try a different USB port directly on the PC, not through a hub.
- Try a different USB cable if the device uses one.
Important: formatting or creating a new volume erases data. Do not do that if files need to be recovered.
If the drive does not appear in Disk Management at all, test it on another PC. If it is still not detected there, the USB drive may have failed.
If this USB is being used specifically as a Surface recovery drive and it will not boot or be recognized for recovery, ensure boot-from-USB is enabled in Surface BIOS and that USB is first in the boot order.
