Do not reinstall Microsoft 365 first; run Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter to remove the residual OneNote and Microsoft 365 en-us components, which are installed Office components rather than files you can reliably locate with Windows Search.
Remove the remaining Office components
- Open Microsoft’s Uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office from a PC page and start the uninstall troubleshooter.
- When Windows says the site is trying to open Get Help, select Open.
- Choose the Microsoft 365/Office installation that must be removed.
- Complete every prompt, and then restart the computer when requested.
- After restarting, run the Office 2024 installer again.
The troubleshooter supports removing Microsoft 365 and earlier Office releases on Windows 10 or later. It cannot remove Office 2024 itself, which is not what needs removal in this case.^1^
Uninstalling Office applications does not delete Word documents, Excel workbooks, or other personal files.^1^
If the troubleshooter finds nothing or Office 2024 still reports the conflict
Use Microsoft’s documented manual uninstall procedure rather than deleting arbitrary files or registry entries yourself. It covers leftover Click-to-Run services, scheduled tasks, folders, installer registrations, and entries such as Microsoft Office <Edition> - en-us.^2^
Manual cleanup is lengthy and includes registry changes; create a restore point or registry backup and follow only the section matching the old installation type.
If the former Office installation came from the Microsoft Store, use PowerShell as Administrator instead:
Get-AppxPackage -Name "Microsoft.Office.Desktop" |
Remove-AppxPackage
# No output from this command means it was removed:
Get-AppxPackage -Name "Microsoft.Office.Desktop"
This PowerShell method applies specifically to the Microsoft Store installation type.^1^
Restart Windows once more and retry Office 2024. Reinstalling Microsoft 365 and uninstalling it again is unnecessary and may simply recreate the same registered components.
