    Hi gasman,

Please run an Online Repair to completely reinstall Microsoft Office and replace any missing or corrupted program files that may be causing the issue.

    Please follow these steps:

    1. Close all Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
    2. Open Settings in Windows. You can search for it from the Start menu, or right-click the Windows icon on the taskbar and select Settings.
    3. Navigate to Apps > Installed apps.
    4. Locate Microsoft 365 (or Microsoft Office) in the application list.
    5. Select the three dots (...) next to the application and choose Modify.
    6. Choose Online Repair, then follow the prompts to begin the repair process.

    Install using click-to-run

Once the repair has finished, restart your computer before testing the Office applications again.

Try a full Office repair instead of the Repair Now button in the Excel popup. That popup usually only does a quick repair, and it often does not fix this problem.

    1. Close all Office apps.
    2. Open Settings.
    3. Go to Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
    4. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
    5. Select it, then choose Modify.
    6. Choose Online Repair and then Repair.
      • This repairs the whole Office suite.
      • It can take 15–30 minutes.
      • Do not cancel it while it is running.
    7. Restart the PC after the repair finishes.
    8. Open Excel again and test the spreadsheet.

If Excel still fails after that, try these additional checks:

    1. Run Quick Repair first only if Online Repair is not immediately available
      • In the same Modify window, Quick Repair is the faster option, but Online Repair is more complete.
    2. Check for add-in problems by starting Excel in Safe Mode
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type excel /safe and press Enter.
      • If Excel opens normally, disable add-ins in File > Options > Add-ins.
      • At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins or Excel Add-ins, select Go, then clear the add-ins and restart Excel normally.
    3. Check for Office updates
      • In Excel, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    4. If Excel hangs or freezes during open, test for software conflicts
      • Perform a selective startup (clean boot) to check whether another background app or service is conflicting with Excel.
    5. Check antivirus integration
      • If antivirus software integrates with Excel, it can cause performance or startup issues.
      • Disabling Excel integration or Excel-related antivirus add-ins can help.
      • Warning: changing antivirus settings can reduce protection.

If the issue affects all Office apps, that further points to an Office installation problem, so Online Repair is the best next step.
