Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
If the microphone setting is missing in Teams, check these places in order:
- In Teams desktop, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices. Under Audio settings, the Microphone dropdown should appear there.
- If joining a meeting, select the dropdown arrow next to Mic in the meeting window, then select More audio settings. Confirm the correct microphone is selected.
- In Windows, verify microphone access is enabled:
Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
- Turn on Microphone access
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone
- Turn on Microsoft Teams (work or school)
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone If these were already on, toggle them off and back on, then restart the device.
- In Windows sound settings, verify the microphone is available:
Start > Settings > System > Sound
Under Input:
- Select the mic in Choose a device for speaking or recording
- If it is missing, select Add device
- Make sure the mic volume is not muted
- If needed, go to Advanced > More sound settings > Recording, right-click the mic, and select Enable
- Back in Teams, run Make a test call from Settings > Devices to confirm Teams detects the microphone.
- If using Teams on the web, check browser microphone permissions. For example in Edge: Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Microphone Turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- If using a USB or Bluetooth microphone and it still does not appear, unplug and plug it back in. For Bluetooth, make sure it is charged and not connected to another device.
If no microphone appears in Windows sound settings either, the issue is at the device or OS level rather than in Teams.
