If the Steam game opens and then closes immediately, and reinstalling Steam and the game did not help, the supported Windows-side steps are:
- Restart the PC
Go to Start > Power > Restart. - Make sure Windows is fully updated
- On Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Install any available updates.
- If the affected game or app came from Microsoft Store, update Store apps
- Windows 11: Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- Windows 10: Open Microsoft Store > See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
- Repair or reset the app, if that option is available
- For desktop apps in Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > select the app > Advanced options > Repair.
- If it still fails, use Reset.
Note: not all desktop apps support Repair or Reset.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app from Windows Settings
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > select the app > Uninstall, then install it again. - If Windows apps started failing after System Restore
Try starting the app again, reinstalling it from its original source, or running Windows Update. - If the issue is with a Microsoft Store app specifically
Reset the Microsoft Store cache:- Press Windows key + R
- Type wsreset.exe
- Select OK A blank Command Prompt window should appear briefly, then Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- If the problem is only with Microsoft Store apps and error 0x80131500 appears
Check these additional items:- Time and location settings
- TLS settings: open Run, enter inetcpl.cpl, go to Advanced, then make sure TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are unchecked, and TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are checked
- On Windows 10 only, run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter from Additional troubleshooters
- If malware or a suspicious app is involved
Run a scan with Windows Security before trying to remove the app.
If the failing titles are standard Steam desktop games rather than Microsoft Store apps, the supported Windows guidance here is limited to Windows update, restart, repair/reset where available, uninstall/reinstall from Settings, and malware scan if relevant.
