If YouTube video plays but there is no sound, the most common causes are the wrong output device, app-specific volume settings, audio enhancements, audio services, or the audio driver.
Try these steps in order:
- Check the app volume
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, make sure the browser playing YouTube is not muted and the volume slider is turned up.
- Check the browser output device
- In Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer,
- Under Apps, confirm the browser is using the correct Output device.
- Check the main sound output
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the correct audio device.
- Make sure volume is not muted and the slider is up.
- Set the playback device as default
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings > Playback.
- Right-click the correct device and select Set as default.
- Turn off audio enhancements
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the audio device being used.
- Under Advanced settings, set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Restart Windows audio services
- Select Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart.
- Test YouTube again.
- Update the audio driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
- Restart the PC.
- If sound is missing everywhere, not just YouTube
- Check speaker or headphone connections.
- If using USB audio, try a different USB port.
- Unplug headphones to test whether sound returns to speakers.
If the issue started after a Windows update, updating the audio driver or rolling back the driver in Device Manager > audio device > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver can help.
