My Excel application suddenly won't allow me to drag and drop cells

This just started a few days ago. It looks like the XLS files are all Protected/Locked, but I didn't lock them and I don't have a password to unlock them.

    Hello Anthony,

Because this started recently and appears to affect multiple XLS files, the behavior could be related to an Excel editing or drag-and-drop setting rather than the files themselves being password-protected.

While troubleshooting, you can temporarily open the file in Excel for the web. If editing and dragging work there, you can continue using the web version in the meantime.

For the Excel desktop app, try these steps:

    1. Select File > Options > Advanced.
    2. Under Editing options, make sure Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop is selected. If it is already enabled, clear it, select OK, reopen Excel, and enable it again.
    3. Select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to install any available Office updates.
    4. If the issue continues, press Windows + R, enter excel /safe, and open a file. If dragging works in Safe Mode, an add-in may be interfering. Otherwise, try an Office Quick Repair.

As another workaround, use Ctrl+D to fill downward or select Home > Fill > Series.

If the issue continues, please let me know whether Excel displays a password prompt or the dragging function simply does not work.

If Excel suddenly will not let cells be dragged or edited, the file may be locked because Excel thinks it is already open, another user has it open, or a previous crash left a temporary lock.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Close the workbook on all devices where it might be open.
      • If the file is open on another PC, Mac, or Excel for the web session, close it there too.
    2. Wait a few minutes and try again.
      • Excel and the server can take a short time to release a file lock.
    3. Restart Excel, then restart Windows.
      • If the lock was caused by a previous crash or a stuck session, restarting can release it.
    4. Check whether the file is actually being edited elsewhere.
      • If another user has it open, wait for them to close it.
      • If only read-only access is available, Excel can allow viewing without editing.
    5. If the workbook is protected, protection may require a password to remove.
      • In Excel, go to Review > Unprotect Sheet or Unprotect Workbook.
      • If a password prompt appears and no password is known, the protection cannot be removed from within Excel.
    6. If the file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and only view access is available, request edit access.
      • In Excel, select Viewing in the upper-right corner, then select Request more access.
    7. If co-authoring is involved, unsupported features can cause locked-file behavior.
      • On Mac, Microsoft documents removing workbook protection, restricted access, refresh-on-open settings for tables or PivotTables, or disabling an Excel add-in if one is causing the lock.

    Important distinction:

    • Worksheet/workbook protection locks cells or structure and can require a password.
    • File locked for editing is usually a temporary editing lock caused by another session, another user, or a crash.

If the issue started suddenly across multiple files, the most likely cause from the available guidance is a temporary editing lock or a stuck Excel session rather than manually applied protection.
