If Windows 11 was purchased from the Microsoft Store or as a Microsoft Store app upgrade, the purchase usually provides a digital license, not a 25-character product key.
What to check:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- If the license is linked correctly, Windows can activate with the digital license once the device is connected to the internet and signed in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Check the confirmation email and Microsoft account Order history. Microsoft keeps a record of product keys only if the purchase was made from the Microsoft online store.
Where a key would be found, if one was issued:
- Bought from the Microsoft Store online: the product key is in the confirmation email that contains the order history.
- Bought a Windows 11 Pro upgrade in the Microsoft Store app: this uses a digital license instead of a product key.
- Bought genuine Windows 11 from the Microsoft Store app: this uses a digital license tied to the Microsoft account used for purchase.
If Windows was already activated before and is being reinstalled, a product key might not be needed. If hardware was changed, especially the motherboard, Windows might need reactivation through the Activation troubleshooter.
