If the touchpad was uninstalled and no longer appears, the supported recovery path is to reinstall or update the driver through Windows and Device Manager, then use the laptop manufacturer’s driver package if Windows does not restore it.
- Open Device Manager.
- Check under both:
- Human Interface Devices
- Mice and other pointing devices
- In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices.
- If the touchpad appears in either category, reinstall it using Device Manager. Reinstalling forces the latest driver to download from Windows Update.
- If it does not appear, try updating drivers through:
- Windows Update first
- Device Manager second
- Restart the laptop after the driver update or reinstall.
- If Windows still does not detect the touchpad, download and install the touchpad driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the exact model, then restart again.
- If the touchpad still does not return after driver reinstall and manufacturer drivers, contact the device manufacturer. A hardware issue is possible.
If keyboard-only navigation is needed in Device Manager, use:
- Tab to move focus
- Alt + A to open Action
- Select Scan for hardware changes
