Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
To the Microsoft for Startups Management Team
I am submitting this feedback to highlight a severe operational breakdown and a structural paradox between the promises of the Microsoft for Startups program and the reality of Azure's infrastructure support. While we appreciate the $100,000 grant provided to our AI startup, the current setup makes it functionally impossible for us to train our proprietary models.
Instead of accelerating our build phase, our experience has been entirely consumed by battling Azure Capacity, billing bugs, and contradictory support messages.
Here is the exact timeline of our experience:
- Months of Delays & Obsolete Hardware: It took over a month and more than 100 support requests just to get quota approval, which resulted only in outdated T4 GPUs. It took another month of aggressive follow-ups to secure just two A10 GPUs.
- False Billing Error Blockers: Our subsequent quota requests were repeatedly rejected with an automated response citing: "Due to insufficient payment history, a previous bank decline, or an unpaid outstanding balance..." This is a critical automated system bug. We are operating on a startup grant, not a standard pay-as-you-go credit card. Being blocked from using grant funds due to a false "payment history" flag is completely unreasonable.
- Blanket Rejections & System Disclaimer: When we raised this with Matt Walser (Technical Manager | Azure Capacity Customer Experience), he informed us that all our requests would be closed automatically. Furthermore, Microsoft for Startups support explicitly told us:
"At present, Azure continues to experience significant capacity constraints for GPU VM families, including A10. Microsoft for Startups does not have an escalation path that can override the current Azure GPU capacity limitations or guarantee approval of additional quota."
- Sudden Infrastructure Disruption: Today, without any prior notification, "microsoft operator" canceled and then reactivated my subscription within minutes. This triggered a total force-kill on all running virtual machines. As a result, our active model training was abruptly aborted, causing severe loss of compute time and progress.
The Core Problem: There is a fundamental mismatch in how Microsoft for Startups is structured. The program heavily markets itself to AI founders by offering $100,000 in credits. However, your support team explicitly admits that the program has zero escalation power to provide GPU capacity, while the Azure Capacity team blocks us with false billing errors.
We are left in a catch-22: we have $100k for AI development, but we are denied the basic compute needed to run it, and our live workloads are being unexpectedly shut down.
We ask that this issue be escalated to a senior lead who can resolve the false payment history error on our account and provide a realistic pathway to the GPU quota required to actually utilize our grant.
