Outlook app losing connection to Exchange Online on Remote Desktop

What is the issue you are encountering? We have two load-balanced Windows Server 2022 (OS build 20348.5631) Remote Desktop servers (RDS) VMs running Microsoft 365 apps (Classic Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2608 Build 16.0.20326.20072) 32-bit) and utilizing FSLogix for user profile containers. Both servers run on the same physical Hyper-V host, share identical Windows Update patch levels, and reboot nightly. Users utilize Seamless Single Sign-On (SSO) and are fully registered for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We have conditional access policies that bypass MFA requirement when using the Outlook desktop app from Trusted Location of these Remote Desktop servers. This problem does not occur when a user signs into the Remote Desktop server, but sometime later. We are wondering if this is related to a 90-minute lifespan for Entra ID OAuth Access Token expiring and not renewing successfully.

How long have you been experiencing this issue? It’s intermittent. We encountered it Thursday last week and Tuesday this week. Was everything functioning correctly before? Yes. Generally, functions without issues.

Have there been any recent changes or updates? No.

If there is an error message, could you please share a screenshot of it? There is no error message, Outlook app status says “Trying to connect…”, an all-white pop-up window appears for the user (that looks like it would be a Windows MFA challenge or sign-in prompt) and does not load any UI.

Have you attempted any troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue?

Closing and re-opening Outlook app > does not resolve Starting Outlook app in safe mode > does not resolve Signing out and signing back in again > does not resolve Signing out and signing into secondary Remote Desktop server > problem does not occur

Hello @Brian Cruickshank

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A

Thank you for clarifying your issue and here’s a simple step-by-step guide you can follow to resolve the Outlook token renewal issue in your RDS + FSLogix environment:

1. Enable Outlook Modern Auth Logging

This will confirm if refresh tokens are failing.

Registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\EnableADAL = 1

  • Open Registry Editor
  • Navigate to the path above
  • Set value to 1
  • Restart Outlook and collect logs. 2. Check FSLogix Profile Container Health.

Ensure token cache files persist correctly across sessions.

Look in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Identity

  • Verify cache files exist and are accessible
  • Compare behavior between both RDS servers
  • Confirm containers mount consistently. 3.Review Conditional Access Sign-In Logs

Identify failed refresh attempts or unexpected MFA prompts.

  • Open Entra ID portal
  • Navigate to Sign-in logs
  • Filter by affected users and time around 90 minutes
  • Look for refresh token failures. 4.Extend Sign-In Frequency Policy

Most Effective Fix

Prevent Outlook from hitting the 90-minute token cliff.

Entra ID → Security → Conditional Access → Authentication Session Controls

  • Set sign-in frequency to 8 hours or 1 day
  • Apply policy to Outlook desktop clients
  • Test with affected users. 5.Update FSLogix and Office Builds

Recent updates fix token handling bugs.

Download latest FSLogix release from Microsoft

Ensure Office apps are patched to current build

  • Reboot servers after updates

In Summary: By enabling logging, checking FSLogix container persistence, reviewing sign-in logs, and extending Entra ID sign-in frequency, you can stabilize Outlook sessions and avoid the 90‑minute disconnect. Updating FSLogix and Office builds ensures long-term reliability.
