A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Use a full Office repair from Windows, not only the small Repair Now button in the Excel pop-up.
- Close Excel.
- Right-click Start.
- In Windows 11, select Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps and Features.
- Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 in the app list.
- Select it, then choose Modify.
- If needed, select the three dots first.
- In How would you like to repair your Office Programs, select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and complete the on-screen steps.
Notes:
- This repairs the entire Office suite, not only Excel.
- Online Repair is more complete than Quick Repair.
- A restart may be needed after the repair.
If Excel still does not open after the repair, the next likely cause is an add-in conflict. Test by disabling add-ins one at a time:
- Open Excel.
- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- At the bottom, in Manage, select COM Add-Ins > Go.
- Clear one add-in, then select OK.
- Restart Excel and test again.
- If the issue continues, repeat with the next add-in.
- If needed, repeat the same process with Excel Add-Ins.
If Excel opens after one add-in is disabled, that add-in is the cause.
If the problem started when opening a specific workbook, try repairing that file:
- In Excel, select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the workbook.
- Select the arrow next to Open.
- Select Open and Repair.
