Yes, Windows 7 Home Premium can be upgraded to Windows 10 Home if the PC meets Windows 10’s hardware requirements, but Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so moving to Windows 11 or replacing the PC is the safer long-term choice.^1^
Before upgrading
- Check hardware compatibility. Older Windows 7 PCs may not meet Windows 10 requirements. Check the processor, RAM, and storage; if the hardware is too old, upgrading may not be practical.^2^
- Back up your documents, pictures, and other important files.
- Confirm licensing. Downloading Windows 10 does not provide a license. A Windows 10 product key might be required unless this same PC was previously upgraded to Windows 10 and already has a digital license. Microsoft documents that previous free Windows 7-to-10 upgrades received a digital license.^3^
Get Windows 10 from Microsoft
- Install all available Windows 7 updates: Start → Control Panel → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- Open Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page.
- Under Create Windows 10 Installation Media, select Download Now.
- Run
MediaCreationTool.exe. - Create installation media using a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases the USB drive.^4^
- While Windows 7 is still running, connect the USB drive and run
setup.exe. In Windows Explorer, it appears under Computer → Devices with Removable Storage.^5^ - Follow Windows Setup. Select the option to retain files and applications if Setup offers it.
If Setup requests activation, use a valid Windows 10 license. After installation, check Start → Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
Because Windows 10 no longer receives normal free security updates or technical support, first check whether the PC supports Windows 11 using Microsoft’s PC Health Check app. If it does not, consider replacing the device rather than installing another unsupported operating system.^6^
