A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Nice level of detail. Here's what I can tell you on each point. Some of it has no public Microsoft answer, so I'll say where that's the case.
What OriginTimeout means. The X-Azure-ExternalError header comes from the Azure Front Door edge in front of the Excel service. 0x80072ee2 is a standard WinINet timeout code, and OriginTimeout means the edge gave up waiting on the Excel backend (sg4-excel). From the outside, you can't tell whether that backend was slow because it was fetching your blob or because of its own load. The viewer doesn't expose that.
SAS URL checks worth doing (these reduce one side of the equation):
- Give the SAS a validity window of hours, not minutes. The backend may fetch the file more than once.
- Make sure a plain anonymous GET on the SAS URL works with no redirects.
- Keep the workbook small, and check blob download latency from Southeast Asia, since
sg4suggests that's where the request is served from.
Detecting the failure. There's no supported signal. The iframe is cross-origin, and its load event fires even on the error page. The practical approach is a timeout fallback: if the user hasn't interacted after N seconds, show a "Having trouble? Reload preview / Download file" bar that resets the iframe src.
Retry strategy. One automatic retry with a short delay, then the manual fallback above, is about as far as you can take it.
The bigger point is that the public op/embed.aspx viewer has no documented SLA. For production use, the supported route is to keep the files in SharePoint/OneDrive and use the Microsoft Graph driveItem: preview action. It returns a short-lived embeddable URL meant exactly for this case.
Are these files tied to individual users, or are they shared reports everyone can see? That decides how the Graph route would be set up.
If this answered your questions, please consider accepting it as the answer. If the failures follow a pattern by time of day or file size, let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping.
