If Word and Excel say they need repair, do a full Office repair from Windows settings. The repair button inside the error dialog is usually only a quick repair and often does not fix the problem.

    For Windows 11:

    1. Right-click Start.
    2. Select Installed apps.
    3. Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
    4. Click the three dots next to it, then select Modify.
    5. If prompted, choose:
      • Online Repair > Repair for a full repair, or
      • Quick Repair first if preferred, but Online Repair is the more complete fix.
    6. Follow the on-screen steps.
    7. Restart the computer if prompted.

    For Windows 10:

    1. Right-click Start.
    2. Select Apps and Features.
    3. Select Microsoft 365 or Office.
    4. Choose Modify.
    5. Select Online Repair > Repair.
    6. Follow the on-screen steps.
    7. Restart the computer if prompted.

    Important:

    • This repairs the entire Office suite, not just Word or Excel.
    • If there is a standalone Word or Excel app installed, select that app by name.
    • If the installation is MSI-based instead of Click-to-Run, choose Repair and then Continue.

If files are opening in the wrong Office app after repair, reset the file association in Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs.

The 'Repair Now' button on that error popup dialog only performs a quick repair of the Office apps and that rarely resolves the problem with the Office apps, the best option is to perform a full online repair of your Office installation.

Before performing this process, please log into your Microsoft account on this link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/) and check to ensure your Office licence or Microsoft 365 subscription is listed correctly on your account.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that process does not resolve the problem, completely uninstall Office, restart your PC, then download and reinstall Office form your Microsoft account on tis link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/).
