I have lost functionality of my START Button and saved application icons on the desktop.

Nothing happens when I click my left mouse button on the start button. If I Right click I get a Menu that only works on a few items.

Many of the needed applications don't work. Basic MS tools. Snip tool will not work to show what I am seeing.

    Hi Sarge-Charge,

I understand how disruptive this is, especially since the issue is affecting not only the Start button but also desktop shortcuts and built-in apps such as Snipping Tool. That broader behavior suggests it may involve Windows shell components rather than the Start button alone.

If you can open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc:

    • Select Run new task.
    • Enter services.msc and select OK.
    • Find Background Tasks Infrastructure Service and verify that it is running.

If the issue remains and started recently, consider System Restore or another Windows recovery option from before the problem began.

I hope this helps narrow down the cause without requiring a full reset. Let us know what you find with the service status, and we can work from there.

    Hii,

If the Q&A assist procedure did not work, try refresh windows > start menu > settings > system > recovery > Fix Windows updates > Reinstall Now.

Please consider rating the question (accepting the answer or not) and visiting the Microsoft Q&A community if you have further questions.

    Thanks.

    Try these steps in order.

    1. Check whether the Start menu process is running
      • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
      • If needed, use File > Run new task, type powershell, and run it as administrator.
      • Run:
             get-Process StartMenuExperienceHost -IncludeUserName

      • On Windows 11, there should be a StartMenuExperienceHost process for the signed-in user.
    2. Check for Start menu crash evidence
      • Open Event Viewer and review the Application log.
      • Look for Event IDs 1000 and 1001 related to StartMenuExperienceHost.exe.
      • Also check related shell issues such as explorer.exe, Search, or ShellExperienceHost.exe crashes.
    3. Test whether a third-party app or driver is interfering
      • Restart into Safe mode, or use msconfig to eliminate third-party drivers and applications.
      • If Start works there, the issue is likely caused by another installed component loading in normal startup.
    4. Clear the icon cache for the blank or broken desktop/taskbar icons
      • Warning: this restarts Windows Explorer. Save open work first.
      • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
      • In Processes, right-click Windows Explorer and select End task.
      • In Task Manager, select File > Run new task.
      • Type cmd.exe and create the task with administrative privileges.
      • Run:
             CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
             DEL IconCache.db /a

      • In Task Manager, select File > Run new task again, type explorer.exe, and press Enter.
    5. Re-register Shell Experience Host
      • Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.
      • Run:
             Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*ShellExperienceHost*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

      • Restart the PC.
    6. Install Windows updates
      • In Windows 11, open Start, type settings in Search, select Windows Update, then Check for updates and install available updates.
      • If Start cannot be used, use another available path to open update-related tools if possible.
      • Keeping the device updated is recommended because some Start menu issues are resolved in monthly cumulative updates.
    7. If the problem started after a recent update and the system is broadly unstable
      • Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup twice; on the third start, Windows should enter recovery.
      • From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, try these one at a time:
        • Uninstall the latest Windows update
        • Startup Repair
        • System Restore
    8. If local policy corruption is suspected
      • Warning: resetting Local Group Policy removes local policy settings and Windows reapplies defaults.
      • Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
             RD /S /Q "%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicyUsers" && RD /S /Q "%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicy"
             gpupdate /force

      • Restart the PC.

If both the Start button and built-in apps are failing, the most relevant first path is: check StartMenuExperienceHost -> review Event Viewer for 1000/1001 -> test Safe mode -> clear icon cache -> re-register Shell Experience Host.
