Microsoft Edge: Sleeping Tabs stopped working

The sleeping tabs feature doesn't work.

Normally, when I open Microsoft Edge, only the recently used tabs from my previous session are loaded; other inactive tabs are unloaded and appear greyed out, such as tabs inside my tab groups that I haven't opened recently. However, today I noticed that all of my tabs were loaded immediately when I opened Edge; no tabs are greyed out. I initially thought that they needed some time to enter the sleeping state, but after waiting a little longer, the tabs are still not greyed out.

I checked that sleeping tabs is enabled, changed the sleeping tabs timeout to 30 seconds, tried doing sfc/scannow, DISM, and resetting Edge's settings, and unfortunately none of these fixed the issue. Is there any other solution that I can try? Thanks!

Sleeping tabs can be enabled and still not put some tabs to sleep. Edge prevents tabs from sleeping when certain conditions are true, including these relevant cases:

    1. The page is visible.
    2. The page shares its BrowsingInstance with another page.
    3. The page is an internal intranet site.
    4. The page is being inspected by DevTools.
    5. The page is playing audio.
    6. The page is capturing a window or screen.
    7. The page is capturing user media such as webcam or microphone.
    8. The page is being mirrored or cast.
    9. The page is on the block list in Always keep these sites active.
    10. The page is using WebUSB.

Since sleeping tabs is already enabled and the timeout was reduced to 30 seconds, the next checks are:

    1. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > System and performance > Performance.
    2. Verify Automatically put tabs to sleep is still On.
    3. Check Always keep these sites active and remove any sites that should not be excluded.
    4. Make sure the tabs being tested are not playing audio, using screen sharing, webcam, microphone, casting, or open in DevTools.
    5. Test with ordinary external websites instead of intranet pages.
    6. Wait for the configured timeout, then click away from the test tab and leave it inactive.

If tabs still do not sleep, Edge also has a separate performance detector feature. When an issue is detected, it can list tabs and allow them to be slept manually:

    1. Go to Settings and more > More tools.
    2. Select Performance.
    3. Select the three dots next to a listed tab, then choose Sleep tab.

If manual sleep works there, the tab can still be put to sleep and the issue is likely related to one of the conditions that prevents automatic sleeping.

Also note that a sleeping tab is different from a discarded tab. Sleeping pauses the page and reduces CPU and some memory use, while a discarded tab removes the page content from memory and must fully reload when reopened.

For enterprise-managed devices, a policy can force sleeping tabs on or off: SleepingTabsEnabled. If that policy is disabled, sleeping tabs are turned off. If it is not configured, users can choose whether to enable sleeping tabs.

    Use edge://discards:

Open this page and look at the Auto Discardable column for your tabs. Any tab showing as not discardable usually has a reason listed, such as playing audio, an active connection, or being blocked by an extension or policy. You can also click Urgent Discard on a tab to confirm discarding works at all.

If the above doesn't help then:

    Check edge://policy

Click Reload policies and look for anything related to sleeping tabs or tab discarding (for example SleepingTabsEnabled, SleepingTabsTimeout, SleepingTabsBlockedForUrls). A policy set by a Windows update, security software or an installer overrides the UI settings and resets won’t remove it. If something is there, check the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge and HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
