A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If OneDrive restored old data but not the latest files after setting up a new PC, use these checks in order:
- Check the correct OneDrive account
- Sign out of OneDrive and sign in again with the account that originally held the files.
- If both personal and work/school accounts exist, check both. Files are often missing because they were saved to a different account.
- Search on the OneDrive website
- Sign in to the OneDrive website.
- Use Search everything at the top.
- Search by filename, file type, dates, or keywords such as project names.
- Check the Recycle bin
- On the left side of the OneDrive website, open Recycle bin.
- If the files are there, select them and choose Restore.
- For work or school accounts, an admin may be able to restore items if they were removed from the recycle bin.
- Use Restore your OneDrive if many files are wrong or missing
- This feature helps undo changes from the last 30 days.
- It requires Microsoft 365.
- Personal account path: Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive.
- Work or school account path: Settings > Restore OneDrive.
- Choose a date such as Yesterday or Custom date and time.
- Review the activity chart and activity feed before restoring.
- Important restore limits
- OneDrive restore only covers the last 30 days.
- Files permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin cannot be recovered.
- Files or folders created after the selected restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin during restore.
- Check the local device
- Use File Explorer to search the old PC or any local storage for files that may not have synced.
- Also check the computer Recycle Bin or Trash.
- For a new PC setup expectation
- OneDrive does not restore a full Windows PC, apps, and all system state. It restores synced files. Windows point-in-time restore also does not affect files stored in cloud services like OneDrive.
If the missing files are older than 30 days and are not in the Recycle Bin, the available recovery options in the provided guidance are exhausted.
