    Reset the Camera app

Settings → Apps → Installed apps

    Find Camera

    Advanced options → Repair

If that doesn't help → Reset

    Check the camera driver

    Right-click Start → Device Manager

    Expand Cameras

Right-click Surface Camera / Front Camera / Rear Camera

    Choose Uninstall device

    Restart the Surface.

Windows should reinstall the camera driver.

Run Windows Update, including Optional updates → Driver updates.

For a Surface, also make sure the appropriate Surface driver and firmware package is installed for the exact model.

For a Surface on Windows 10 showing 0xA00F429F <WindowShowFailed> (0x8007007F), use this order:

    1. Run the camera troubleshooter first.
      • On Windows 10, start the automated camera troubleshooter in Get Help.
      • On Surface, the Get Help app can automatically run diagnostics and take corrective steps for many camera issues.
    2. Check camera privacy settings.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Make sure Camera access is On.
      • Make sure Let apps access your camera is On.
      • If the problem is only in certain apps, also make sure desktop apps are allowed to access the camera.
    3. Check for Windows and driver updates.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • If nothing appears, open Advanced options > Optional updates and install any camera driver updates.
      • Restart the device after updates.
    4. Check the Surface app.
      • Open the Surface app.
      • Expand Help & support and check update status.
      • If updates are available, select Check for updates.
      • Use Get help in the app to detect Surface-specific issues.
    5. If the issue started after an update, roll back the camera driver.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Right-click the camera > Properties > Driver tab.
      • Select Roll Back Driver if available.
      • Restart and test the Camera app.
    6. Reinstall the camera driver.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Cameras.
      • On Surface, check whether Intel(R) TGL AVStream Camera or Intel(R) AVStream Camera appears.
      • Open the camera device > Driver tab > Uninstall Device.
      • Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device > Uninstall.
      • Restart the Surface.
      • On general Windows devices, Action > Scan for hardware changes can also reinstall the driver.
    7. Force restart the Surface.
      • Select Start > Power > Shut down.
      • After it shuts down, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
      • If the logo appears earlier, keep holding until it appears again.
    8. If the camera works in some apps but not others, close apps that may already be using the camera.
      • Right-click the taskbar > Task Manager.
      • End any app that may be using the camera, then test again.

Important: Do not uninstall camera drivers on Surface Pro X. That can require a full system reset to restore them.

If the camera still fails after these steps, restore or reset the Surface, or use Surface support options such as the Surface app, service order, or in-person support.
