That's a good start but backing up your documents, pictures, and desktop to OneDrive is not everything you need to do to move to a new Windows laptop.
OneDrive handles your core user folders, but several important items will not move over automatically. Installed applications and programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, web browsers, games, and specialized utilities will need to be downloaded and reinstalled on the new laptop using the appropriate product keys or accounts.
Files stored outside OneDrive will also remain on the old laptop. This includes files or folders saved in local directories, such as the root of the C: drive, local Downloads folders, or secondary hard drives, unless you have specifically moved or copied them into a OneDrive-synchronized location.
Application settings and local data may also require separate handling. Examples include locally stored game saves, application-specific configuration files, and local email archives such as older Outlook .pst files. These may need to be backed up or transferred manually.
Saved passwords and credentials also do not necessarily transfer automatically. Passwords synchronized through your Microsoft account or browser account should become available when you sign into the same account on the new laptop, but locally stored passwords and network credentials may require additional attention.
You should also use Windows Backup on the old PC. Open the Windows Backup app, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, and make sure your app list, Wi-Fi networks, and Windows preferences are being backed up to your Microsoft account. When you sign into the new laptop with the same Microsoft account during initial setup, Windows can restore many of these settings.
On the old laptop, double-check your OneDrive configuration by going to OneDrive settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Verify that Desktop, Documents, and Pictures are enabled and have completely finished syncing. You should also check your local Downloads folder and any other custom folders for important files, installers, PDFs, photos, or other data that you may have overlooked.
On the new laptop, OneDrive files may initially appear as online-only files through Files On-Demand. If you want particular files or folders physically stored on the new laptop for offline use, right-click them in File Explorer and select Always keep on this device.
Finally, gather the license keys, subscription information, and account credentials needed for the applications you plan to reinstall. This will make it easier to activate your software once it is installed on the new machine.
