Core Windows apps failing to open, TPM 2.0 disabling itself

Hi,

I've been having an issue with my PC recently where I can't open some core windows apps.

Media player, calculator, snipping tool, Windows Security, and game bar all come with this notification (maybe more apps too). The game bar happens when I open a whole variety of apps too.

Windows store also completely fails to open, but no pop-up on that one.

The photos app does work.

I realised that my computer keeps disabling TPM 2.0 itself, so was wondering if that had anything to do with my issues, and how can I stop that happening too?

Specs

Windows 11 Home

Ryzen 5 2600x

Asus ROG RX580

AsRock B450 Steel Legend

16gb RAM

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - it's frustrating not being able to use these apps.

    Welcome Harry,

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when several built-in Windows apps are affected at the same time.

Since Calculator, Snipping Tool, Windows Security, Media Player, and Microsoft Store are all having trouble opening, I’d first check whether this is affecting the Windows app components more generally.

    Before proceeding, could you confirm:

    • Did this start after a Windows update, BIOS/UEFI update, or any hardware/firmware change?
    • When TPM becomes disabled, how are you confirming this: in the BIOS/UEFI, through “tpm.msc”, or somewhere else?

In the meantime, please try these steps:

    • Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install any available updates, and restart the PC
    • Press Windows + R, enter wsreset.exe, and select OK. A blank Command Prompt window may appear temporarily. After it closes, check whether Microsoft Store opens
    • For one affected app such as Calculator, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Calculator > Advanced options, then select Repair. If repairing it does not help, select Reset

For the TPM issue, press Windows + R, enter tpm.msc, and select OK. Please let me know exactly what appears under the TPM status and what is shown for “Specification Version”.

    Looking forward to your update.
