Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
A personal Microsoft 365 subscription is purchased with a personal Microsoft account. That account can use an existing third-party email address such as Gmail, so a Google mail address can be used as the sign-in for the subscription.
For a personal setup:
- Create or use a personal Microsoft account.
- A Microsoft account can be created with an existing third-party email address such as Gmail or Yahoo.
- Purchase a personal Microsoft 365 subscription tied to that Microsoft account.
- The subscription is connected to the Microsoft account used for purchase.
- Sign in to account.microsoft.com to view the account and subscription.
- Install the apps by signing in at microsoft365.com with the account associated with the subscription.
If the goal is to keep using the desktop apps such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the context shows that personal licenses that include desktop rights are:
- Microsoft 365 Personal
- Microsoft 365 Family
If only free web apps are needed, Office on the web is available through Office.com, but that is separate from buying the desktop suite.
If there is still a work or school Microsoft 365 account from the retiring organization, that account and a personal Microsoft account remain separate and cannot be merged. The usual path is to sign in to Microsoft 365 with the personal account for licensing and move needed files, emails, contacts, and calendar data separately.
For retirement transition planning, the student transition guidance also points to moving files from a school account to a personal account and exporting contacts, mailbox, and calendar data to a personal account.
