Hello Stuart Andrew,
I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with this. The earlier failed restore may have left Windows setup or update components incomplete. defaultuser0 is a temporary setup account, not an account with a usable password.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
- Since the updates have shown Pending restart for hours, save anything open and select Start > Power > Restart. Do not hold the power button unless the whole PC is completely frozen. Keep it plugged in and allow the restart to finish, even if the update screen takes a while.
- Once Windows loads, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Windows Update.
- Right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin), and run these commands separately:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart afterward and check for updates again.
Also install the GPU driver directly from the graphics card manufacturer’s website. If Windows returns to defaultuser0 or cannot start, try Startup Repair.
Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.
