Hello, I've been regularly using and editing shared Word files on OneDrive. Suddenly, today it doesn't let me to edit the same files I had been editing. It now says "This account does not allow editing on your device. For an account with full access, contact your organization about your subscription." I've got a subscription and haven't changed the device I use for accessing OneDrive. Any help would be much appreciated. I really need the editing access.

Thank you

Dear Iva,

Thank you for the details and screenshots. Having to download, edit and re-upload every file is a real hassle, especially when this used to work. Your screenshots give a useful clue. Both messages,"contact your admin" on the sign-in page and*"contact your organization about your subscription plan"* in Word, normally appear for work or school accounts. Since you use a personal Microsoft account, it looks like the Word app on your phone has become confused about which type of account you're signed in with, most likely because of outdated sign-in information stored in the app. Please try the following on your phone:

  1. Sign out of Word: In the Word app, tap your profile picture, select your account, and choose Sign out. If more than one account is listed, sign out of all of them.
  2. Clear the app data: Go to Settings > Apps > Word > Storage and select Clear data. This only removes data stored in the app. Your files in OneDrive are not affected.
  3. Check for a work account on the phone: Go to Settings > Accounts and see whether a work or school Microsoft account is listed. If you no longer use it, consider removing it, as it can affect how Office apps sign in.
  4. Sign in again, open Word and sign in with your personal email address. If you're asked to choose an account type, select Personal account.

If the problem continues, uninstall and reinstall the Word app, then sign in again. It's also worth signing in at account.microsoft.com/services in a browser to confirm your subscription shows as active on that same email address.

In the meantime, opening the files in your phone's browser at onedrive.com and editing them in Word for the web should save you from having to download and re-upload them.

Let me know how it goes after these steps, and we'll take it from there.

    Dear Iva,

As a forum moderator, I am not able to access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. My role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions for users to implement themselves. That message usually points to a licensing or account-recognition issue, not the OneDrive sharing permissions. Since editing worked previously and stopped suddenly, it is worth confirming whether the problem affects the Word app, the specific files, or your account license. Could you please share a few more details?

    • Can you edit the files in Word for the web ?
    • Can other collaborators still edit the same files?
    • Can you create and edit a new blank document?
    • Is the subscription Microsoft 365 Personal/Family, or supplied by an employer or school?
    • Does Word show Unlicensed Product, Activation Required, or another account warning?
    • Are your colleagues using the same kind of account seeing this too, or only you?

A screenshot of what you see would also help a lot. Please mask any personal information such as your name, email address, or account details before posting it. Once you share these details, I will do my best to help you sort this out. Looking forward to your reply.
