A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
This usually happens when the Mac is using the wrong Office build or the license is not associated with the signed-in account.
For a one-time purchase such as Office Home 2024 on Mac:
- Make sure the apps were not installed from the Mac App Store. Mac App Store versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint require a Microsoft 365 subscription to create and edit. One-time licenses such as Office 2024 are not compatible with Office apps downloaded from the Mac App Store. In that case, the apps show a yellow message and run in reduced functionality or view-only mode.
- Install Office from the Microsoft account tied to the purchase. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard and confirm the product appears under purchased products/services. The account used to sign in must be associated with the Office purchase, because that account is what verifies the license and allows install and activation.
- If the wrong account was used, sign out and sign back in with the purchasing account. Choosing Work or School instead of the Microsoft account that owns the one-time Office Home 2024 purchase can prevent the license from being recognized.
- Check the license status in an Office app. In an Office app, go to File > Account and check Product information. For a successful activation, it should show Microsoft Office Home and Business 2024 or the purchased Office product rather than an unlicensed or subscription prompt.
- If Office was activated with the wrong license, remove the current license files and reactivate. Microsoft documents this for Mac when multiple licenses or the wrong license are attached to Office.
- If Office still cannot activate after install, reset Office credentials on the Mac. Open Spotlight > search for Keychain > search for Office > delete the data license file, then run the Microsoft 365 Activation troubleshooter.
- If activation says the purchase is confirmed but still will not activate, check the
PriviligedHelperToolsfolder permissions. In Finder > Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library, locate PriviligedHelperTools. If it shows a red stop icon, fix permissions. If the folder is accessible but empty, uninstall and reinstall Office for Mac, then activate again. Note: permission changes in Library folders can affect system behavior, so use care.
The most likely fix in this scenario is:
- uninstall the Mac App Store version if that is what was installed,
- reinstall Office from the Microsoft account that owns the one-time Office Home 2024 purchase,
- sign in with that same personal Microsoft account, not Work or School, unless the purchase was actually made through an organization.
