Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
There is no reliable way to make Word mail merge send through New Outlook today. Word’s Finish & Merge > Merge to E-Mail depends on MAPI, and New Outlook for Windows does not currently support MAPI integration. That is why Word can appear to complete the merge while no messages are sent, or sent items do not appear.
Supported options are:
- Use classic Outlook for Word mail merge
- Word mail merge with Outlook contacts is supported only with classic Outlook for Windows.
- If mail merge is required, classic Outlook must be installed and configured on the PC.
- Microsoft states that classic Outlook and New Outlook can run on the same machine.
- Start the merge from classic Outlook or Word with classic Outlook configured
- In classic Outlook: People > select contacts > Home > Mail Merge.
- In Word: Mailings > Finish & Merge > Merge to E-Mail works only when a supported default mail program is available.
- If using Outlook contacts in Word mail merge, Outlook should be the default email program and the same version as Word.
- If classic Outlook is installed but mail merge hangs at “Initializing Microsoft Word”
- Disable Word COM add-ins temporarily, restart Word, and try again.
- As a workaround, some users succeeded by running classic Outlook as Administrator for the mail merge, then restarting Outlook normally afterward.
- Another workaround is to start the mail merge in Word and use Outlook contacts there, or export contacts to Excel CSV and run the merge from Word.
- If classic Outlook is closed and mail from MAPI apps does not send automatically
- Configure classic Outlook and, if needed for automatic sending while it is closed, run it in Online Mode by disabling Cached Mode.
For the current New Outlook behavior, the practical resolution is to use classic Outlook for the send step. New Outlook’s own Start mail merge option can send each recipient an individual copy, but it does not insert personalized fields from contacts, so it is not a replacement for Word mail merge.
