Azure Firewall Policy update succeeds but returns "Failed with 1 faulted referenced firewalls"

Hi,

We're building an integration that creates new rules into an Azure Firewall Policy. On one update we received this error:

Put on Firewall Policy <policy name> Failed with 1 faulted referenced firewalls.

However, the policy change itself appears to have succeeded, and the new rules are visible in the policy. Our understanding is that the policy was updated, but applying it to the associated firewall failed.

Our questions:

  1. Does this error occur only when the policy update succeeds but deployment to a firewall fails, or can it appear in other scenarios as well?
  2. Does this faulted state block further operations on the firewall or the policy?
  3. What is the actual impact? Is the firewall still enforcing the previous policy version?
  4. Can we manually re-apply or refresh the policy on the firewall, and if so, what's the recommended way?
  5. Does Azure retry or refresh automatically?
