Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
- Start with the Microsoft Sign-in Helper. It checks the account details provided and guides to the correct recovery or security steps: Sign-in Helper.
- If the password was forgotten, use Reset your password: Reset your password.
- If there are signs the account was hacked, first scan the PC for malware before changing the password:
- Open Windows Security
- Go to Virus and threat protection
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now
- After the malware scan completes, sign in and change the password immediately. If sign-in still fails, reset the password instead.
- After access is restored, review account security activity:
- Go to Security basics
- Select Review activity
- For any suspicious sign-in, choose This wasn't me or Secure your account
- Then check account settings that attackers commonly change:
- connected accounts
- forwarding
- automatic replies
- If password reset does not work, use the account recovery form: Account recovery form.
Important:
- If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
- Support can be contacted through Microsoft support options, but agents are not allowed to reset the password or directly change account security details.
