I get the following error when I'm going thru the sync process:

"Setup can't continue because Outlook isn't configured to have a default profile. check your outlook settings and try again."

To expand on the answer already provided. This error is not what it seems. iCloud is complaining that the default Classic Outlook data file is not a PST type.

    Hi, Steve Dentz

That message can appear even when Outlook is working normally. The iCloud setup needs a classic Outlook profile, which is different from making Outlook the default Windows app.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Close Outlook. Open Control Panel, search for Mail, then select Show Profiles. Choose Always use this profile and select your Outlook profile. Open classic Outlook once, close it, and try the Calendars and Contacts setup in iCloud for Windows again.

If your Outlook account is Gmail or another IMAP account, it is recommended that you create a temporary Outlook Data File using New Items > More Items > Outlook Data File. Set that file as the default under File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data Files, restart Outlook, and retry iCloud setup. This has resolved the same error when an IMAP data file was the default. Keep your existing data files; don’t delete them while testing.

If it still fails, try a new Outlook profile without deleting the old one.

This error usually means the sync protocols are not associated with Outlook, or Office needs repair. Follow these steps in order:

    1. In Windows, open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
    2. Select Set defaults by app.
    3. Find Outlook, select it, then choose Manage.
    4. Check each file type and make sure it is associated with Outlook.
    5. Close that window.
    6. Repair Office:
      • Open Start > Settings > Apps.
      • Select the Microsoft Office product and choose Modify.
      • If it is Click-to-Run, choose Online Repair > Repair.
      • If it is MSI-based, choose Repair > Continue.
    7. Restart the PC and try the iCloud sync again.

If that does not fix it, check for older Office versions in Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall any older version found, then restart and test again.

If Office was installed from the Microsoft Store or came preinstalled as Microsoft Office Desktop Apps, uninstall that installation from Settings > Apps, restart, and then reinstall Office.

There is also a PowerShell-based reconfiguration path for the Microsoft Store Outlook installation. This requires administrator privileges and changes the installed app configuration, so use it carefully. After running those commands, Office still needs to be repaired.
