This is an ongoing issue over the last 11 days at least. At my workplace this is essentially a full work stoppage. I have tried with small, large, old, and new workbooks. I have tried saving locally, I have done the App Settings > Reset Excel troubleshoot, I have uninstalled and re-installed the app, I've done a software update, I have even now been issued a brand new device, and the saving/hung app issue continues. This is affecting iOS users globally at the end of a fiscal quarter. This is a major issue and needs to be publicly addressed. Microsoft should be updating users on progress toward a resolution, at the very least in the App Version notes in the App Store.

Many people are reporting this problem with Excel on an iOS device, ensure your Excel app is fully up to date, then, try saving the file with a different name, if that process is not successful, you need to wait for Microsoft to resolve the problem with a new update.

In the meantime, try accessing your Excel files in Excel online in a web browser (https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-365/excel), and check if you can successfully save your edited Excel files.

Yes. Recent Excel and iPadOS updates have been associated with Excel freezing or becoming unresponsive when saving or exiting on iPad, and newly entered data may not save.

    Try these fixes in order:

    1. Sign out of Excel, force-close it, then reopen and sign back in.
    2. Test with a new blank workbook. If a new file saves normally, the issue may be specific to one workbook.
    3. Use the temporary workaround if Excel freezes: turn off Wi‑Fi or enable Airplane mode, wait for Excel to become responsive, then reconnect and try saving again.
    4. Reset Excel cloud settings: on iPad, go to Settings > Excel > Reset > Reset Cloud Settings, then restart Excel.
    5. Check iPad storage: low free space can prevent saves or make apps unresponsive. Check Settings > General > iPad Storage.
    6. Reinstall Excel if the problem continues. Make sure files are synced to OneDrive or otherwise backed up first so data is not lost.

Additional Excel save-related causes to check:

    • Save with a new file name: in Excel, use File > Save As and save with a unique name.
    • Try another save location: save to a different location such as local storage or another drive/location.
    • Save as a different file type: use File > Save As and save as .xlsx or .xlsm instead of older formats.
    • Check file path length: if the full path and file name exceed 218 characters, Excel can show Filename is not valid.
    • Check permissions/read-only state: Excel needs read, write, modify, and delete permissions to complete a save.
    • If the file is shared or co-authored: make sure the file is not read-only. For Excel on iOS, AutoSave can be turned on from File > AutoSave.

If the problem started immediately after an update, that matches reported behavior in the available support cases.
