Common causes for SharePoint or OneDrive files opening as read-only, even when edit permission exists, are:
- Use the file menu instead of selecting the file name.
- In the document library, select Open Menu (the three dots) for the file.
- Then select Edit.
- This is a documented fix for files that open read-only from SharePoint.
- Check whether the library is configured to force read-only behavior.
- Files can sync or open as read-only when the library has Checkout Required enabled.
- The same can happen when the library uses Validation columns or metadata.
- It can also happen when Draft Item Security in Version Settings is set to Only users who can edit or Only users who can approve items.
- Check whether Office is in reduced functionality mode.
- If Office is not activated, or the subscription has expired, Office apps can open files as read-only.
- Check the file’s Windows attribute.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
- Check whether antivirus is forcing read-only.
- Some antivirus products open potentially unsafe files as read-only.
- Review the antivirus settings for file protection behavior.
- Check whether the document is opening in Protected View.
- Office documents can open in Protected View, which prevents editing even when permissions are correct.
- Try the standard Office recovery steps.
- Restart the computer.
- Check that all Office updates are installed.
- Perform an Online Repair of Office.
If the files are in a library that requires checkout, another symptom is that documents opened from links may stay read-only until the file is checked out.
